10 tips for stress-free wedding makeup

Stress free wedding hair and makeup is very important for any bride.  The more relaxed you are on your big day, the more radiant you will appear in your photos, and the more natural your smile will be, and lets face it, that’s what we all want in our wedding photos.  Stress free wedding makeup isn’t an afterthought, and it doesn’t just start and end with a good makeup artist and hair stylist, it must start with the preparation of your skin and hair beforehand.  The better the canvas is, the easier the professional’s job is,  The easier their job is, the less stressed they’ll be, and the more time you’ll have to sip that all important glass of champagne on the morning of your big day.

Most brides will consult a beauty therapist in advance of the big day, and book in for at least one facial, and perhaps some teeth whitening.  However, a few facials spattered over the few months leading up to the wedding, without any follow up and care at home,  aren’t going to guarantee amazing skin for your big day.  When you go in for your first facial, have a good chat to the beauty therapist about your skin, what products you’re using at home, and any suggestions they may be able to offer.  Look at starting, or overhauling, your skincare routine at least 6 months before the wedding for optimal results, with some of the tips listed below.

After you’ve got this in gear, look at the cosmetics you’re using every day.  Are you using fantastic skincare, but not seeing results?  Your everyday makeup could be to blame.  If you’re cleansing, and using a good mineral oil, animal by product free skincare range, but still suffering breakouts, it could be that the makeup you’re using is blocking your pores.  Ideally, invest in some every day makeup which will be just as good for your skin as your skincare is, and you’ll get the most out of your skincare investment.

Here are some of tips for amazing looking skin on your big day:

  • One of the most frustrating things I see as a makeup artist is a bride saying their eye makeup always seems to look like a pancake, and always seems powdery, and they don’t want it to look this way in their photos.  Alternatively, the other one is they want their dark under eye circles or wrinkles to disappear.  Wrinkles is a key one we get from the mother of the bride.  The remedy for this is using an eye cream.  Its the most overlooked part of any skincare routine, and I often get asked is it really worth it?  Can’t I just use my normal moisturiser?  The answer is yes, it is worth it, and no, your normal moisturiser is not ideal for this area.  The skin in this area is thinner, and doesn’t contain as many sweat glands, hence, it is prone to be a lot drier, and hence the dark circles, wrinkles and crepey appearance.  Eye creams are specifically designed to target these things.
  • Make sure you use SPF every day in your moisturiser or makeup or both.  This even applies if you’re working in an office.  Even in an office, you are generally still exposed to UV radiation throughout the day as you walk into the building.  SPF will help to halt the development of dark age spots, which are another thing we’re often asked to cover up.
  • Drink plenty of water, and watch your food intake.  Most of us think of this when it comes to your diet, but not in regard to wedding makeup.  Believe it or not, what we eat and drink ends up reflecting in our skin.  Drinking plenty of water is a key strategy to ensuring your skin remains well hydrated.
  • A good skincare routine doesn’t mean you need to spend 2 hours in the bathroom every morning.  It can be as simple as a cleanser and toner in one in the shower, followed by a good moisturiser with SPF and eye cream, or a night cream and eye cream at night.  A good skincare routine is critical to ensuring that you receive optimal benefit from the money you’re spending on your facials.
  • If you want to minimise the amount of money you’re spending on facials, you could also consider investing in a good masque and scrub for at home use.  A good masque may cost you the same as a salon facial, but consider that you’ll get multiple uses (in some cases up to 20 or more applications) from the one jar/tube.
  • With your hair, similarly it can pay to invest in a good shampoo, conditioner and hair masque.  Start with a good salon treatment, and then take care of it with good at home care.  This way your hair will be in better condition to stand up to the heat treatment and styling that it will no doubt be exposed to on the wedding day.
  • Make sure you also start to get your colour in order at least 6 months before the wedding.  This will allow plenty of time to perfect the colour, and get it exactly right.  It will also allow enough time to work around things if, God forbid, something goes wrong, and you do have a colour disaster.

The more effort you put into your skincare and hair care, the better your skin will be.  Good skin & hair are a professional’s dream, as it means there is less product, and less fancy brushwork required.  Get to know your makeup artist and hair stylist before hand.  In most instances, they’ll be more than happy to chat, and recommend an at home routine, and how to prepare yourself for a stress free morning.
